Defence Ministry clears Rs 15,935 cr plan to buy guns for armed forces

The defence ministry on Tuesday gave approval to several acquisition proposals, including for 7.4 lakh new assault rifles and 16,500 light machine guns, collectively worth Rs 15, 935 crore. The Defence acquisition council, chaired by defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman, also cleared the proposal for the purchase of 5,719 sniper rifles at the cost of Rs 982 crore.

The security cover of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader Hardik Patel has been withdrawn by central government based on a security assessment. Hardik had been given a Y+ category security by the Intelligence Bureau in November 2017. Eight armed Central Industrial Security Force commandos were guarding the PAAS leader. He has been campaigning against the BJP.
