On this day: Anthropologist completes 4300 mile journey on wood raft

On 7 August 1947, Thor Heyerdahl, a Norwegian anthropologist, completed a 4300 mile trip from Peru to Raroia in Tuamotu Archipelago, on a balsa wood raft. The journey lasted 101 days on the raft named Kon-Tiki. He did the journey because he wanted to prove the theory that prehistoric South Americans may have colonized Polynesian Islands by drifting on ocean currents.

Number of solo women travellers on the rise in India

According to a recent survey, the number of solo women travellers has been rising in the country with 75% growth in bookings for such journey to some tour operators. Most of these women are from tier-1 cities, the survey found. Cleartrip has witnessed a 10% year-on-year growth in solo bookings till date this year, of which 22% were women solo travellers.
