Mig La: World’s Highest Motorable Road Opens

India has completed the World's Highest Motorable Road at the Mig La Pass in eastern Ladakh. Constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under Project Himank, the new Mig La Pass reaches an altitude of 19,400 feet (5,913 meters), surpassing the previous high-altitude record set at Umling La Pass at 19,024 feet.The route forms part of the Likaru-Mig La-Fukche alignment, connecting the Hanle region with Fukche village near the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Temperatures dropped well below freezing, while workers and engineers navigated snowstorms, icy winds, and unpredictable weather patterns. Specialised machinery and continuous monitoring were required to maintain progress under these conditions.According to the BRO's official tweet, the project involved careful planning for logistics, equipment, and personnel deployment in harsh terrain. Snow removal, slope stabilisation, and road surfacing were executed under high-altitude constraints to ensure the route remains motorable throughout the year.
